On
August 15, 1977, the Ohio
State University's received
a strong radio signal which was used to search for extraterrestrial
intelligence.
When Astronomer Jerry R. Ehman was
reviewing this recorded signal, he was so delighted that he circled the
computer printout, and wrote a comment stated as Wow!
Analysis of the signal
showed that it displayed all the hallmarks of coming from interstellar space. The entire
signal sequence lasted for the full 72-seconds which is unusual for a comet. Many hypothesis on the existence of this signal has advanced
which makes the Wow! Signal the strongest candidate for an alien radio
transmission ever detected.
Conclusion:-
Jerry R. Ehman didn’t find aliens but he did find two
suspicious looking comets. This could be significant because comets are
surrounded by clouds of hydrogen gas that are millions of kilometres in diameter.
The ‘Wow!’ signal itself was detected by Ehman at 1420MHz, which is a radio
frequency that hydrogen naturally emits.
If it isn’t comets, SETI scientists still have
their best candidate for an extraterrestrial signal.
Good informative article.
